Hi all, Alex here.

I founded Renew Mental Health to make quality counselling affordable and accessible, particularly for those struggling with tech-related issues and the rise in ADHD. While I mainly work with couples and families strengthening relationships, I’m also passionate about individual counselling. My Masters training focused on Narrative Therapy (looking back) and Solutions-Focused Brief Therapy (looking forward), offering a different approach to traditional therapies. I aim to create a safe space to explore any concerns. Individual sessions involve understanding past narratives to create positive change. For couples, I use Gottman and Emotionally Focused Therapy to improve communication and connection. Counselling is an investment in yourself and your wellbeing. I look forward to supporting your journey.

About Renew Mental Health

At Renew Mental Health, we believe deeply in the transformative power of our minds.
Life experiences—both positive and challenging—create internal stories that shape how we think, feel, and behave. Over time, some of these narratives can become entrenched or embibed as limiting beliefs, holding us back from living fully and authentically.

In therapy, we primarily use the principles of Narrative Therapy (White & Epston, 1990) to help you recognise and understand these stories, working collaboratively to “re-author” them and help find the way towards your preferred future.

Additionally, we also uniquely understand the challenges that modern parents face. With the increasing prevalence of ADHD, video-game addiction, technology and social media addiction and many other challenges of parenting in today’s world; families and couples require specialised support.

Renew Mental Health offers workshops and direct services designed to empower parents to:

Our mission is to equip you with the tools to renew your mind, your relationships, and your life.

FAQ

What is the difference between a psychologist and a counsellor?

  • In Australia, there are two key differences between a psychologist and a counsellor. Firstly, a psychologist is trained in assessment and diagnosis in order to diagnose you with a specific mental health condition. A counsellor not trained in this way and will not provide you with a diagnosis related to your concern. If you need a medical diagnosis, we would recommend speaking to your GP and getting a referral to speak to a psychologist in order to achieve this. A counsellor with a Masters degree in Australia is trained to work therapeutically with any mental health concern, and will focus on this work with you towards your goals rather than diagnosing you with a particular condition.
  • Secondly, psychologists are all trained to use a specific model of therapy called CBT, which they are then free to integrate with other therapeutic models in a way which they feel is best for them and their practice. A Counsellor with a Masters degree in Australia may use CBT in their process, but they may be trained in other effective and evidence based therapeutic models also which some people may prefer to CBT.

Sadly, counsellors are not yet eligible for medicare provider numbers in Australia. However, there is strong push and we are hopeful that we might be added to the medicare access scheme in the near future. With that said, we also aim to be more affordable to access than any psychologist, even including the medicare rebate. Additionally, if you have private health insurance some insurers cover access to professional counselling, so please check your policy to see if counselling is included!

Everyone responds differently to the therapeutic process. Generally, our aim is to see you progress towards your goals or hopes from the very first session. Depending on the nature of your concern, we might be able to address it in only a few sessions, however, some concerns are more complex and can require a longer-term approach in order for you to experience the change that you want to see. We generally leave this judgement in the hands of your very capable therapist, and review progress regularly to make sure that you are progressing towards your hopes and goals.

Your first counselling session will typically involve an initial assessment where your counsellor will gather information about your history, environment, and the problems you are experiencing. This information will help your counsellor gain a holistic understanding of your circumstances to formulate a plan to support you that is tailored to your individual needs. This session is also a great opportunity to get a sense of who your counsellor is and your connection with them (aka, the “vibe”) which is an important ingredient in the therapeutic process.
